Published web services connect to your database directly using a .NET Provider, OLEDB or ODBC. These standard connection technologies work over existing infrastructure and can use existing security.
A published web service is housed in a Microsoft IIS Web Server. Users access the web server to invoke the web service. The query is started using standard SOAP XML, and the results are returned in XML.
